Every battery has a finite lifespan — even the one that powers your e-bike, and batteries can take a toll on the planet when they’re not disposed of properly. We’re here to help you keep riding responsibly. We partnered with Call2Recycle to turn Trek stores into official e-bike battery recycling centers, so you can easily recycle your used e-bike battery and help us keep landfills free of harmful waste. 

The e-bike battery recycling steps

Step 1: Visit your local Trek retailer

Stop in to your local Trek shop and talk with our e-bike experts to find the best electric bike for you.

Step 2: Ride it and love it

This is the fun part. Ride your e-bike to work, school, the grocery store, and anywhere else your heart desires. Most batteries will last between 5 to 10 years, for thousands of fun adventures!

Step 3: Recycle your battery

When your e-bike battery reaches its end-of-life, return it to the store to be responsibly recycled.

The importance of recycling used e-bike batteries

In the United States, over 12 million electric bikes are estimated to be sold between 2020 and 2030. That means 12 million batteries will go directly into our landfills if they aren’t responsibly recycled.

How do I know when my e-bike battery needs to be replaced?

You’ll know when your e-bike battery has reached the end of its life when it doesn’t work as effectively as it used to. Will it cost money to recycle my used e-bike battery?

When you buy a new Trek e-bike or e-bike battery, you pay a $15 battery recycling fee — think of it as paying it forward.  Then, when it comes time to recycle your used e-bike battery, there’s no additional cost.

What if I already own an e-bike and need to recycle its battery?

If you already have an e-bike and need to recycle the battery, we’ll happily recycle your used e-bike battery free of charge. 

What happens to my e-bike battery once I drop it off at my Trek store?

Call2Recycle partners with trusted recycling organizations throughout the country that will recover materials from old e-bike batteries and use them to manufacture new products in a safe and environmentally friendly way.
