A better fit from the start

Almost twenty years ago, before any other major bike company was designing for women, we released our first full line of women's-specific bikes.

Our mission was simple: build better bikes for women. When we set out to accomplish this, we discovered that a single approach doesn’t work for all women. And in the end, we learned about more than what it takes to build better bikes for women. We also learned what it takes to build better bikes for everyone.

So whether you find your perfect Trek in our collection of bikes built specifically for women or find that a mainline bike feels better for you, you’ll know the design was informed by decades of considering women from the start.

Why it matters

Here’s the reality: every woman is unique. Women want different things from a bike. But no matter what, a bike has to feel good, handle confidently, and ride efficiently. Although every Trek bike is built to these standards, we know some women have specific needs that aren’t met by our mainline models. That’s where Women’s Specific Design comes in.

What is Women's Specific Design (WSD)?

Women’s Specific Design is what we call frames and bike parts made from the ground up for women. Trek and Bontrager products with the WSD badge were conceived, designed, tested, and developed specifically for a woman’s needs.

WSD saddles, for instance, are shaped for a woman’s specific contours and soft tissue areas. WSD road and mountain bike frames are available in smaller sizes and a geometry that accounts for a woman’s proportions.

What is a women's bike?

Let’s get one thing straight. A women’s bike is any bike a woman rides. At Trek, we use the designator “Women’s” to separate bikes with WSD frames and parts from our mainline models.

Every Trek road, mountain, or city bike with one or more WSD parts can be found in our Women’s collection. What differentiates a Women’s bike from a bike from our mainline collection varies by model. All Women’s models have WSD touchpoints, like saddles and handlebar width. Some Women’s models also have WSD frame geometry, wheel size, crank length, and stem length.

Does WSD make a difference?

Yes. Thousands of women across the globe ride bikes with Women’s Specific Design, and they rave about it. Check the reviews on our bike pages.

Do I need a women's bike?

This depends entirely on your riding style and preferences. According to market research, 60% of women prefer a women's-specific bike model, whereas 40% of women prefer a mainline model.

What if I like a mainline bike better?

There is nothing wrong with that! In fact, good for you for trying a variety of products to make sure you’re on what works best for you.

How will I know what's right for me?

We have endless data about women’s biometrics that informs the design of our WSD bikes and parts. But what really matters is how you feel on your bike. If you’re not sure if you’ll prefer a WSD or a mainline model, the best way to know is to test both at your local Trek retailer.
