We build e-bikes that help protect access to places to ride

Electric bikes and e-MTBs have opened cycling to millions of people. They help people ride farther, ride more often, and spend more time outside.

The incredible access e-bike riders enjoy today on mountain bike trails and bike paths is the result of decades of work by volunteers, advocacy organizations, landowners, and riders. That access depends on trust.

As e-bike technology evolves, we believe it’s our responsibility to protect the relationships that make those rides possible. That’s why we’ve chosen to set clear, voluntary speed standards designed to help preserve access for years to come.
Our commitment

To help protect access to trails and shared paths, Trek has adopted voluntary e-bike speed standards in the United States.

Electric mountain bikes

• Class 1 only
• Pedal assist up to 20mph maximum
• No throttle

Pavement e-bikes

• Pedal assist up to 20mph or 28mph maximum (where permitted)
• 20mph max throttle assist

We believe these standards deliver all the benefits of e-bikes while helping preserve the shared places where people ride.

Why we’re taking the lead

The trails and paths we ride today didn’t happen by accident. They exist because generations of riders and advocates worked alongside land managers and communities to earn access.

As e-bike technology has become faster and more powerful, we believe that access could be put at risk. We believe the industry has a responsibility to act before access becomes more restricted, not after.

Trek’s mission is to get more people on bikes. Protecting the places people ride is one of the most important ways we can make sure future generations have the same opportunities we do today.
