MTB setup & maintenance

If you want to have the best possible time on the trail, you’ve gotta take great care of your bike. The good news is it’s not too diffcult to keep your ride in tip-top shape. In fact, we’ll teach you the basics right here and now!

Mountain bike suspension adjustment

You can adjust your mountain bike suspension pressure to match your individual rider weight. You can also adjust the firmness of your shock to match the terrain you’re riding with the blue compression damping lever. The red rebound damping knob adjusts how quickly your suspension bounces back after compressing, and it usually correlates with your air spring pressure. Learn more about how to set up mountain bike suspension with our step-by-step guide.

Mountain bike fork length

Trek full suspension mountain bikes are often compatible with slightly longer forks with more suspension travel. Installing a longer fork will give you more control on descents but will make the front wheel more likely to wander on climbs. Depending on which model fork you have, you may be able to simply install a longer air spring to get that extra suspension travel, or you might have to get a new fork.

Not every frame can safely handle a longer fork, so it’s important to check your bike’s maximum fork travel listed in the specifications.

Mountain bike suspension service

Your mountain bike suspension fork and shock should have regular maintenance performed at certain intervals. This involves replacing dirty fluids and seals, as well as inspecting or replacing other internal parts that keep your suspension working like it should. Service intervals vary by suspension manufacturer. This is a service best left to experienced technicians and can be performed at your local retailer.
