What is Mips?

Bontrager helmets with Mips (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) have a low-friction layer between the shell and liner. The Mips Brain Protection System is designed to allow your head to move within the helmet, which can redirect harmful rotational energy during certain angled impacts.

How it works

In a crash, the Mips system allows the helmet to rotate independently around the head, which can redirect harmful rotational energy and reduce the risk of strain to brain tissue during certain angled impacts.

Small movement, big difference

Mips is intended to imitate the brain's way of protecting itself by giving the helmet its own low-friction layer between the outer shell and the liner.

The Mips low-friction layer

This small movement comes from the low-friction layer called the Mips Brain Protection System (BPS), which is found between your helmet’s shell and comfort padding.

Reducing rotational force

This layer allows your head to move inside the helmet when it’s impacted, which can redirect harmful rotational motion that could otherwise be transferred to your brain.
