The transformative power of kids on bikes – Trek x NICA

It’s tough being a kid today. For many, the pressure to mimic what they see on social media is growing – and instead of feeling more connected or inspired, they often end up feeling isolated or not good enough. Studies show that all this time kids are spending online hinders social skills, contributes to health issues and affects attention spans. Kids can’t sleep. They’re having trouble concentrating. They’re more anxious and depressed than ever.

Now, imagine a world where more kids swap screen time for saddle time. They get more fresh air. They spend time with their friends face-to-face. Their mental health improves, and their physical health along with it. They climb into bed at night, after parking their bike in the garage, and they drift into an easy sleep without even remembering to check their Instagram.

The National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) has helped get over 100,000 kids on bikes since its inception in 2009 NICA prioritises confidence and camaraderie over competition to build strong minds, character and communities through cycling. And they have one rule: everybody rides.

It’s a safe space for kids to get out of their comfort zone, learn healthy habits and enjoy some friendly competition. And it helps make riders for life. We think the world needs more of that – and that's why we're all in on helping it grow.

Trek set up a fund to provide the seed money for new leagues. We committed to donating US $10 from the sale of each full-suspension bike and US $1 from the sale of each mountain bike tyre and asked our retailers to match it. Over $7.5 million later, NICA has expanded its membership to over 26 US states and counting, and they’ve even launched pilot programmes in Australia and Canada.

We’re passionate about getting more kids on bikes because we truly believe it will make for a better world. And we’re more excited than ever to be a part of this crucial investment.
