Trek Bicycle has announced that it has signed on as the official bike sponsor of the inaugural Axel Merckx Granfondo Okanagan taking place July 10, 2011 in Penticton, British Columbia. The event is the first of its kind to take place in the picturesque Okanagan Valley and is expected to draw several thousand participants.
As the Team Director of the Trek/LIVESTRONG U23 team, Axel Merckx recognizes the relationship with the Trek brand runs much deeper than just a simple sponsorship agreement. “Trek is a great partner to work with on the Trek/LIVESTRONG program,” said Merckx. “I’m excited to have them on board. World-class bikes for a world-class event.”
Recently, Granfondos have experienced a boom in North America as more and more riders participate in a number of new events throughout the continent. The unique format, popularized in Europe, allows riders to experience the rigors of a full pro-level race with the same mechanical and course support enjoyed by professional cyclists.
The Granfondo Axel Merckx Okanagan is a fully supported ride featuring several categories and distances to challenge riders of all levels. The traditional Granfondo will span 160 km, while the shorter Mediofondo will feature a 90 km route. The weekend of the Granfondo (July 8-10) will feature a full schedule of events leading up to, and after, the ride, including a cycling expo, a Piccolofondo (children’s ride), and a wine festival.
