Trek: Trek and Trek Retailers: Committed to Advocacy

There were plenty of success stories to swap at this year’s Trek World, and the commitment of Trek retailers to the 1 World 2 Wheels program was one of the biggest being shared.
 
“1 World 2 Wheels is not just the flavor of the month,” said John Burke, President of Trek Bicycle Corporation, during a keynote presentation which kicked off Trek World 2009. “The key point is that [the program] is making a huge difference.”
 
In mid-July, 1 World 2 Wheels began a “Go By Bike Challenge” pledge campaign that encouraged the population to travel by bike to school, work, the store, and on short trips. The actual pledge campaign ended on August 31st with over 29,000 individuals pledging online and at Trek retail locations to ride over 11 million miles. Every day during the campaign, one lucky pledger was selected to receive a brand new Trek 7.2 FX bike.
 
“The Go By Bike challenge was a terrific tool for retailers to use to encourage people to consider going by bike,” said Rebecca Anderson, Director of Bicycle Advocacy at Trek.
 
Trek retailers who enlisted the most pledges were recognized at a Trek World awards ceremony. Trek Stores of Omaha, St. Louis, and Kansas City, as well as Kulshan Cycles of Bellingham, Washington, and Mad Dog Cycles of Orem, Utah, were each presented plaques commemorating their achievements.
 
Two years ago, Trek and Trek retailers launched the 1 World 2 Wheels program to make the world a more bike friendly place. With overall goals of donating $1 million to the Bicycle Friendly Communities program, $600,000 to IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association), and increasing the number of trips taken by bike in the U.S. from 1% to 5%, 1 World 2 Wheels has quickly become one of the strongest voices for bicycle advocacy in the industry.
 
Trek currently donates $1 to Bicycle Friendly Communities for each helmet sold and $10 to IMBA for each full-suspension bike sold. Last year, 97 Trek Retailers chose to “Double Down” and match this contribution.
 
This year, 1 World 2 Wheels would like to increase the number of retailers who “Double Down” by 100%. As of mid-August, $327,143 has already been donated to the Bicycle Friendly Communities program, and over $210,000 to IMBA by Trek and Trek retailers
