A story of unity, surprise and true team spirit

Together we can move mountains (and one-car garages)

When Trek employees Mitch P. and Jennifer G. purchased some land down the road from Trek Headquarters in Waterloo, Wisconsin, they were excited to start building their forever home. But there was something weighing on them that they just couldn’t carry alone.

On their property sat a one-car garage that needed to be relocated onto a new concrete slab so they would have room to construct their home. Mitch tried to move the shed himself, but the uneven ground made it impossible to move the almost one-tonne structure with just one person and a trailer.

So, Mitch did what anyone who’s spent time at Trek knows is second nature: he asked for help.

In an email to co-workers, he outlined his unusual request:

“I am trying to recruit 20+ volunteers to move a one-car garage (4.2 x 6 metres) in Waterloo. We’ve removed the roof to reduce the weight down to an estimated 900 kg. This is not work-related, and no one owes me anything, so no problem if you’d prefer not to join in.”

Mitch hoped for 20 volunteers. What he got was 30+ co-workers, all eager to lend a hand.

During their lunch break, the group gathered with work gloves on and sleeves rolled up. Together, they lifted the garage with ease, setting it down on the new slab in less than three minutes.

It’s proof that no task is too big – or too heavy – when we tackle it together. And now, everyone who showed up that day knows that if they find themselves in a quandary, they can lean on their teammates to show up and help carry the load.
