The Importance of Aerodynamics

Why do we put time, manpower and dollars into studying aerodynamics? Because less air resistance equals less rider energy output and higher speeds—two things of crucial importance when you’re racing against the clock.

Just how much does aerodynamics affect your performance? Consider this: around 8 MPH you spend about as much energy overcoming the wind as you do overcoming rolling and drivetrain resistance combined. But at 25 MPH you spend about seven times more energy overcoming the wind as you do rolling and drivetrain resistance. So the faster you go the more energy you spend overcoming the wind. It’s interesting to note the power consumed by drivetrain losses is relatively small even at speed, such that an innovation that reduces bearing friction by, say, 4% would be practically undetectable compared to reducing aero drag by a similar amount. Clearly, improvements in aerodynamic efficiency are where you’re able to get the most bang for your buck.
