Helmets for riders of e-bikes, speed pedelecs, or S-EPACS
A proper helmet is the most important safety accessory for cycling, and every rider should wear one every time they ride. Users of speed pedelec bicycles, or S-EPACS, often ride at higher speeds than those on traditional bikes, so they require a helmet that offers more protection in higher-speed crashes? Starting in 2017, riders of S-EPAC bicycles in the Netherlands will be required to wear a helmet that complies with the new standard NTA-8776. This standard classifies S-EPACs as mopeds, and accordingly requires their riders to wear a helmet that meets additional safety testing standards. Under the regulation, S-EPAC bicycles include those with an auxiliary electric motor that assists the rider with additional power and allows the user to pedal up to a maximum speed of 45 km/h. The law encourages the use of helmets that offer additional protection to the occipital and temporal areas of the head, but remain suitable for use in physical activities and do not impede the hearing ability of the user. As always, Bontrager’s Crash Replacement Guarantee ensures that any helmet involved in a crash within a year of purchase will be replaced free of charge.
