Part non-profit bike shop, part community revitaliser, DreamBikes is an organisation that hires and trains teenagers in disadvantaged neighbourhoods to repair and sell donated second-hand bikes. Since 2008, DreamBikes has refurbished and returned over 10,000 used bikes to the community, provided jobs for over 80 teenagers and helped a diverse audience to see the world from the saddle of a bicycle.

The first DreamBikes was opened in Madison in April 2008. By the end of 2009, the shop had refurbished and recycled 1,400 donated bicycles back into the Madison community. A year later, the second DreamBikes opened its doors on North Martin Luther King Boulevard in Milwaukee.

At the heart of DreamBikes is a passion for building community and the belief that providing young people with work experience will open up future job opportunities that will make a difference in their lives. Today, both shops continue to thrive, and DreamBikes has become a staple in Madison and Milwaukee, offering free mobile bicycle repair in neighbourhoods throughout the cities, teaching valuable employment skills to teenagers, and providing affordable transportation to those who need it most.

DreamBikes also offers a scholarship through The Andrew Meyer Memorial Fund for employees who wish to continue their education. Meyer, a Trek engineer who commuted 12 miles to and from work every day – rain, snow or shine – tragically passed away in 2013. His legacy and strength of spirit lives on through this rewarding DreamBikes programme thanks to the generosity of Meyer’s family.

Want to get involved? DreamBikes is always looking for impassioned individuals and companies to help carry on this crucial work. Donate a bike, donate your time or host a bike drive, and help us to build on the inspiring dream of changing the world one bike, and one kid, at a time.
