Kids' bike helmets

Watching your child learn to ride a bike is an incredible experience. But with great fun comes great responsibility. It’s important to provide your child with proper protective equipment, including a helmet, and to teach them to use it on every ride. Starting your kids’ riding career off with proper safety precautions can help ensure a lifetime of safer fun on two wheels.

When should I get my child a bike helmet?

If your child is over the age of one, we recommend that they wear a bike helmet when they are riding or when they are in a bike trailer or a tag along. Quality children’s bike helmets are readily available. If you have any concerns about your toddler or small child wearing a bike helmet, please discuss it with your paediatrician and follow their guidance.

How do I choose the right size children’s helmet?

Just like with adult helmets, you can measure your child’s head to get an idea of which size helmet to purchase. Be sure to have them try on the helmet before you buy it, to make sure that it can be adjusted to provide a proper fit.

How do I get my child to wear a helmet?

The best way to do this is to model good behaviour. If you and other trusted adults always wear a bike helmet on every ride, your child will be more likely to wear one too – even when they aren’t under your watchful eye. Note: children should not wear helmets in the playground.

How often do you recommend kids’ helmets be replaced?

Kids’ helmet replacement guidelines are the same as those for adult bike helmets:

Replace an old helmet or a helmet with damage. The helmet is designed to absorb shock by partial destruction of the shell and liner. This damage may not be visible. Therefore, if subjected to an impact, the helmet should be destroyed and replaced even if it appears undamaged. The helmet has a limited lifespan in use and should be replaced when it shows obvious signs of wear. Helmet parts lose strength over time, so even if the helmet has not been impacted or damaged, we recommend replacing it after three years.
