Basics: This position is responsible for defining and refining all aspects of Bontrager Wheels including; functionality, testing and sourcing while meeting criteria for product features, cost, manufacturability and project schedules.
Overview: Creates and leads teams on new product designs. Assists in project meetings. Helps define product specifications. Anticipates future market opportunities. Learns, develops, implements and utilizes tools which reduce leadtimes and minimizes risk in product development process (including PDM systems, CAD systems, FEA system and departmental standards).
Responsibilities:
-Engineers, designs and develops wheels for OE bike categories (ATB, Road, Hybrid and specialty) along with unique aftermarket only wheels.
-Produces high-level analysis and optimized structures factoring in materials, weight, durability and strength.
-Supports development needs through production cycle and delivery to retail.
-Works with Product and Industrial Design teams to engineer the best wheels in the world.
Characteristics: To be successful, the Wheel Design Engineer must be highly organized, priority driven and able to complete simultaneous, multiple, time - sensitive tasks. Operating with a sense of urgency is critical. This individual deals with shifting priorities and acts as the focal point of communication for internal and external resources. The Engineer needs two seemingly paradoxical skills: an innate sense of self - direction along with the capability to function (and sometimes lead) in a team based culture.
The Engineer also must understand complex test and analysis data to help the team make appropriate and informed decisions on specific wheel designs. The skill set required should include dexterity with computer databases, spreadsheets and timelines as well as computer aided design and engineering applications and advanced mathematical modeling and analysis programs.
Travel: Includes trips to Asia two or three times per year for about one week per trip as well as US domestic and European travel is anticipated.
Background: The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering plus five years of professional mechanical design engineering experience with a consumer product in a fashion driven market. Wheel design experience is ideal; a strong passion for the cycling is a must. Works equally well getting hands dirty with manufacturing group as with Design Engineers in a team atmosphere.
The candidate excels at SolidWorks and Cosmos 3D CAD applications, possesses a strong background in mechanical engineering and analysis, and has worked through product development cycles with internal Industrial Design, Manufacturing, Marketing functions and external Vendors.
