Tim Don had a very successful start to the World Cup Triathlon Series with a well-earned position on the podium at the Mooloolaba, Australia last Sunday. He secured the bronze medal – success made all the more sweeter being his first podium since 2005 and thereafter his elbow-breaking crash in Beijing.
Tim has been consistently strong in training, picking up wins in off-season triathlons. In Mooloolaba, he ran his own race, settling comfortably into the bike and running stages where he rode and ran close to the front of the pack. He was able to pick up the pace in the final lap of the running stage, opening a gap between himself and closest rival Bevan Docherty (NZ), crossing the finish line in 01:50:23 – only 9 seconds behind silver medal winner Brad Kahlefeldt (AUS). It was the world number one Javier Gomez (ESP) who took the gold.
Third out of 150 elite athletes is no mean feat and Tim will be working hard over the Series to move onto the higher podium places. His next campaign will be the New Plymouth BG World Cup in New Zealand this coming weekend.
