Last weekend saw Sutton Park in Birmingham host the 2008 British Cyclo-Cross Championships, where the top riders turned out in force to attempt claim on this year’s most desired title.

It was indeed an exciting day of racing on an uncharacteristically mild and sunny winter’s day. This time around however, it was not the mud that made it tough, but the strength and force of the wind. Riders found it difficult to challenge their rivals and were driven back, even though they were working at near-full intensity.

In the Under 23 Men’s Category, it was Science in Sport/Trek team rider Ian Bibby who, despite the obstacles, fought the hardest to again take home the coveted jersey. He, Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles) and Science in Sport/Trek team–mate David Fletcher made a fast and strong start together at the front of the pack, Fletcher unfortunately taking a fall a few laps into the race. Field put the hammer down at several points around the tough course but couldn’t gain a lead due to the wind.

It the end it came down to a sprint finish between Bibby and Field, Bibby just clinching the win and with it the defence of his title. A great win for Bibby and two great podium places for Trek, with Fletcher fighting back successfully after his fall to take third place.
