Liz Blatchford has staged a comeback to the world of triathlon, since she crashed in a criterium race back in June, resulting in two nasty fractures to the spine. And what a comeback! On Sunday 2nd December, 6 months after her fateful injury, she was crowned winner of the Laguna Phuket Triathlon, Thailand, winning with a margin of two minutes over her closest competitor, Mirinda Carfrae (AUS).

Right from the start, Liz swam, rode and ran her own race. With a strong start on the 1.8 km swim, Liz managed to edge a gap going into the 55km bike stage and then effective work on the hill sections and excellent descending meant that she could maintain her lead. Her legs felt strong and so the final 12km run was a breeze, finishing in a noteworthy time of 2:42:24.

With this result, Liz has indeed overcome much adversity and has truly proven her strength of body and mind. She is now surely back on the path to Beijing.
