Road: Glory for Holly Avil and Trek at the Triathlon World Championships

Great British triathlon team member Holly Avil rode her Trek Madone to glory and a gold medal at the 19th International Triathlon Union World Championships in Hamburg, Germany at the beginning of this month impressively securing the title of Junior World Champion. This is Holly’s first world title and quite an achievement at only 17 years old.

After a strong swim, Holly and three other fellow competitors instigated a breakaway from the main pack, however were quickly reeled in on the bike. After a good transition, she managed to move into the lead on the first lap of the run. Maintaining and extending the lead meant that Holly was unquestionably on her way to her biggest win yet. She crossed the finish line in 59:43 with a sizeable 11 second lead over her closest rival, Ashleigh Gentle who took the silver medal.

Holly, who is two years younger than most of the other athletes competing in her category, has had a phenomenally successful year also claiming the Junior European crown in July in Copenhagen. Due to her determination, skill and maturity she will be one of the top contenders in the coming years so watch this space.
