Alberto Contador, after finishing in twentieth position at the first on-line stage of the Tour of Spain, commented that it had been a day "with more nerves than expected”, perhaps because of the dangerous finish with possibility to lose time.”
"With 40 kilometers to go and tensions heightened, Liquigas was trying to control and many others vying for first positions. We all arrived there with a lot of reserve forces. In the last two kilometers it was hard to stay in the front. Everybody knew that a lot of seconds could be lost or won.”
Contador's fitness continues to improve, although he is still not at the top. "I still need some more days to find the pedal rhythm that I like, but I believe that I will arrive in good condition to the time trial."
In reference to Valverde's victory, Contador commented that it was a typical demonstration of Valverde’s abilities. “Alejandro will do this more than once in this Vuelta. He arrived here in good shape and he has already taken some time bonuses. I congratulate him because today he won like a real champion."
