The speed sensor should be set up on the front fork leg, mounted to the right hand (drive side) fork leg, facing forward, with the battery compartment facing up. This will give the sensor proper orientation both to read the magnet properly, as well as for the best possible signal path to the head unit. It should be mounted about half way or higher up the fork leg to help shorten the signal transmission distance for the most reliable reading.
