  • Cranking Out Billions of Calculations Per Second

In a scene evocative of a classic SportsCenter commercial, eight Trek bicycles recently powered a SiCortex SC648 Supercomputer as it performed complex genomics analysis at a rate of billions of calculations per second. At the recent Wired Magazine NextFest convention in Los Angeles, SiCortex harnessed the power of the Jax Bicyles Racing Team riding Trek bicycles to demonstrate both the low power consumption of its computers and the power generating potential of the bicycle. Riding Trek 1.2s connected to rear wheel mounted generators, Jax cyclists churned out an average 260 watts each to power the Supercomputer.

“For every high-performance computer in use today, society could benefit from a hundred of them," said Dr. John Mucci, SiCortex CEO. "But unless we retire the current power hogs, we will never get there in a sustainable way. Ten years ago, this [very advanced genomics] analysis was impossible on even the biggest computers, and now it’s being done on a bicycle-powered machine."
