The 18th Annual Trek 100 Ride that benefits the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer Fund (MACC) broke a new record, raising $1,300,000 from a Friday night donor reception and auction and Saturday’s Trek 100 ride.
According to John Burke, President of Trek, “We are thrilled that the Trek 100 inspired so many people to ride in support of MACC Fund; raising $1.3 million is a stunning accomplishment and we are proud to be a part of this effort.”
Both the ride and reception were headlined by U.S. Congressman Jim Oberstar, a leading bike advocate in Congress, and seven time winner of the Tour de France, Lance Armstrong.
Armstrong addressed the crowd on Friday night with an update on the work of the Lance Armstrong Foundation and his commitment to cancer research. Audience members had each raised $1,000 for the MACC Fund to earn a ticket to the reception and a jersey to wear in the following day’s ride. Oberstar followed Armstrong with an equally passionate speech on his commitment to making cycling a safe form of recreation and transportation across America.
A highlight of the reception was Armstrong himself heating up the live auction of a special edition LIVE STRONG Trek Madone. When bidding was hovering around $25,000 Armstrong offered to match the winning bid. Two bidders remained until the price hit $40,000 and then the gavel fell. Victory went to Jim Hoyt, owner of Richardson Bike Mart in Dallas, who sold Armstrong his first bike at age 10.
The next day a record 3,300 riders took to the roads of Pewaukee, Wisconsin for the Trek 100. Colleen O’Neil Moran, Ride Director for MACC Fund said “Lance Armstrong was an incredible addition to the Trek 100 this year and could account for an increase in 1000 additional riders, and subsequently an increase in the amount of money raised to support pediatric cancer research. It was a thrill for everyone to see Lance at the start of the ride on Saturday. “
The Trek 100 raises money for childhood cancer research and related blood disorders. The Trek 100 is the MACC Fund’s largest fundraiser of the year and has raised $7,000,000 for MACC Fund since its inception.
